Make Your Home Sparkle With Our Spring Cleaning Tips

Nothing beats the feeling of coming home to a space that’s sparkling clean and clutter-free. Since Spring is right around the corner, we’re sharing our own list of essential spring cleaning tips to help you get the job done faster and more efficiently:

1. Keep your cleaning routine organized

Work out the best schedule for your cleaning checklist to keep things efficient. Divide your list into daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal buckets. Under each, itemize specific tasks and include a rough estimate of how long you want to spend on each. Here are some examples:

DAILY:

  • General pick-up
  • Make beds
  • Load of laundry (fold and put away)
  • Wash dishes
  • Wipe down counters and bathrooms
  • Sweep floors
  • Take out trash

WEEKLY:

  • Dust furniture and shelves
  • Mop floors + vacuum
  • Change linens
  • Scrub down toilets, tubs, showers, sinks
  • Wipe down appliances

MONTHLY:

  • Wash out trash cans
  • Change furnace filter
  • Clean stove and oven
  • Clean kitchen + bathroom cabinets

SEASONAL:

  • Declutter pantry for expired items
  • Sort & clean closets, donate/discard items
  • Wash comforters, duvets
  • Vacuum baseboards, heating and cooling vents
  • Disinfect garbage cans

By putting a routine in place, you divide and conquer the clutter and turn cleaning into a habit instead of a chore.

2. Deep cleaning is best when done room by room

Another effective way to finish your spring cleaning checklist is to take it room by room. Take note of the areas that need extra attention such as the kitchen and bathroom. Pay special attention to the parts of your home that were neglected during the winter such as your garage or basement.

Spring cleaning tips for your kitchen:

  • Wipe down your cabinets and shelves.
  • Don’t forget to go through your pantry and refrigerator and discard any old items.
  • Make sure to include your appliances in your spring cleaning list.

Spring cleaning tips for your bathroom:

  • Change your shower curtain.
  • Check your medicine cabinet and throw away any expired items.
  • Remember to scrub your floor, wall tiles, sink, and toilet.

3. Wash your windows and walls

Most people forget to include windows and walls in their spring cleaning checklists. Wiping off grime and dust from your walls and washing your windows actually makes a huge difference in making your home feel much cleaner. We recommend going from top to bottom for the best results.

4. Get a headstart on decluttering

One of the most time-consuming parts of spring cleaning is getting rid of clutter. Marie Kondo—an acclaimed author of books about the joys of tidying up—says that “life truly begins only after you have put your house in order.”

Most people tend to organize their belongings into four categories: trash, give away, store, and put away. Marie, however, recommends categorizing them into clothes, books, papers, miscellaneous items, and, finally, sentimental items. As part of her KonMari MethodTM, she recommends keeping only the things that speak to the heart and discarding those that no longer spark joy.

5. Teamwork makes the spring cleaning dream work

No task is too difficult when you’re surrounded by people willing to lend a helping hand. Make your spring cleaning tasks easier by getting your household involved. Sprinkle in some fun by setting goals, establishing incentives, and putting some music on while everyone works.

6. Get ready for spring events and parties

Spring is the perfect time for backyard parties, barbecues, and cookouts. That’s why it’s important to tackle your seasonal cleaning checklist as soon as the first hint of spring arrives.

Clean your patio, wash the exterior of your windows and doors, and clean your grill. Don’t forget to put away and store your winter decor, clothing, and other items.

7. Keep your gutters clean

Your gutters serve as your roof’s drainage system. They divert thousands of gallons of water annually from your home’s exterior and foundation walls. When clogged by a build-up of debris, your gutters may be unable to drain rainwater from your roof, which can lead to costly and preventable damage.

To avoid this, make sure to get your gutters inspected at least twice a year. Clean and repair gutters every spring and before heavy rains begin in fall.

8. Protect yourself from allergens

Whether you’re sensitive to allergens or not, it’s always a good idea to wear protective gear while cleaning. Put on a face mask when it’s time for dusting. Wear rubber gloves if you’re working with chemical-based cleaning products.

9. It’s time to wash your bulky beddings

Clean beddings contribute to a lot of good things such as helping you enjoy a good night’s sleep, deterring dust mites, and keeping you comfortable. Wash your comforter and pillows regularly to get rid of any buildup of dirt and allergens. Before tossing them into the washing machine, make sure to check the manufacturer’s label for cleaning instructions.

10. Adopt new cleaning habits

We covered this a bit in tip #1, but completing a spring cleaning checklist is a great opportunity to start an ongoing cleaning routine.

Set aside 15 minutes of your day to tackle items on your spring cleaning to-do list. This helps in getting you in the habit of tidying up making your next spring cleaning even easier.
